Identification, signs & where to look

What it looks like

The house mouse, Mus musculus, is the main mouse associated with UK buildings. It is much smaller and more lightly built than a brown rat, with a pointed muzzle, large ears relative to the head and a long, thin tail.

Evidence to check

  • Small dark droppings
  • Fine gnaw marks
  • Nocturnal scratching
  • Shredded nesting material

Common locations

  • Behind kitchen units and appliances, cupboards and food stores
  • Lofts, wall cavities, suspended floors and service voids
  • Around pipe, cable and door penetrations where small gaps provide access
Understand it

Lifecycle, lookalikes & why it appears

Lifecycle and seasonality

House mice can remain active and breed indoors all year. Warm buildings with dependable food allow populations to persist regardless of outside weather.

What can look similar?

  • Young brown rats: generally heavier-headed and larger-footed, with proportionally smaller ears
  • Wood mice or other small mammals that may enter occasionally but are not necessarily established indoors

Why it appears

Mice exploit very small openings and stay close to food, warmth and nesting material. Poor food storage, clutter and unsealed service penetrations make buildings easier to occupy.

First steps

What you can do now

  • Store food and pet food in robust closed containers
  • Clean crumbs and spills and remove easy nesting material
  • Inspect pipework, kickboards, door gaps and service penetrations for access
Avoid

Do not rely on expanding foam alone for rodent proofing; mice can gnaw many soft materials. Avoid unsecured poison and traps, and never use a control product contrary to its label.

DIY or professional?

When professional help makes sense

Use professional help when signs occur in several rooms, activity returns after DIY control, the source is hidden in shared voids, or the property is a food, hospitality or other sensitive business.

What treatment normally involves

Professional control should combine identification, monitoring, targeted control and proofing advice. In connected buildings the inspection may need to consider neighbouring units or common service routes.

Impact

Risks & damage

  • Contamination of food and preparation areas
  • Gnawing of packaging, insulation and cables
  • Rapid spread through connected voids in flats and commercial buildings
Costs

What affects the quote?

Costs depend on the number of affected areas, repeat visits and how much proofing is needed. A useful quote states what follow-up and proofing are included.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can mice really get through tiny gaps?

Yes. House mice can exploit surprisingly small building gaps, which is why proofing around services and doors is central to long-term control.

Why do mice come back after trapping?

Repeat activity often means the access route, food source or harbourage has not been corrected, or mice are moving through a shared building void.

Still not certain?

Use evidence before choosing treatment.

If the signs do not match cleanly, use the visual Pest Finder or get professional identification rather than treating a guess.
