Identification, signs & where to look

What it looks like

Adult bed bugs, Cimex lectularius, are wingless, flattened, oval insects, typically about 4–6 mm long and reddish-brown after feeding. Eggs and early nymphs are much smaller. Bites alone cannot confirm bed bugs.

Evidence to check

  • Live insects or shed skins
  • Dark spotting around mattress seams and frames
  • Repeated bites can occur but do not prove bed bugs
  • Eggs or harbourage signs in cracks

Common locations

  • Mattress seams, bed frames and headboards
  • Bedside furniture, skirting, cracks and fixings close to where people sleep
  • Upholstered seating and adjoining rooms in established infestations
Understand it

Lifecycle, lookalikes & why it appears

Lifecycle and seasonality

Bed bugs develop from egg through several nymphal stages to adult, taking blood meals between moults. Heated buildings allow activity throughout the year.

What can look similar?

  • Fleas: laterally flattened jumping insects, often linked with pets
  • Carpet beetle larvae: hairy fabric pests that do not blood-feed
  • Skin reactions from non-pest causes; bites alone are not diagnostic

Why it appears

Bed bugs are usually introduced in luggage, furniture or belongings and then hide close to resting hosts. Infestation is not proof of poor hygiene.

First steps

What you can do now

  • Look for live bugs, shed skins, eggs and dark spotting rather than relying on bites
  • Avoid moving bedding or furniture to other rooms
  • Reduce clutter and make the bed area accessible for inspection
Avoid

Do not use agricultural, veterinary or unapproved chemicals indoors; do not rely on smoke bombs/foggers as a substitute for a proper inspection; do not discard furniture without containing it and considering how it will be removed.

DIY or professional?

When professional help makes sense

Professional treatment is usually the best route once bed bugs are confirmed, especially where more than one room or adjoining accommodation may be involved.

What treatment normally involves

A professional programme normally starts with a detailed inspection, preparation instructions and a treatment plan that may combine residual products, physical methods, monitoring and follow-up. More than one visit is common.

Impact

Risks & damage

  • Itching and sleep disturbance
  • Spread between rooms or properties when infested belongings are moved
  • Treatment failure when harbourages are missed or DIY products are used indiscriminately
Costs

What affects the quote?

Bed-bug work is usually priced by affected rooms, treatment method, preparation complexity and follow-up. Very cheap single-visit claims should be compared carefully with the proposed inspection and revisit plan.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Do bites prove bed bugs?

No. BPCA specifically advises looking for physical evidence such as insects, shed skins, eggs and spotting because bites can have many causes.

Can bed bugs live in a clean home?

Yes. They need access to a host and harbourage, not dirt; hygiene alone does not prevent introduction.

Still not certain?

Use evidence before choosing treatment.

If the signs do not match cleanly, use the visual Pest Finder or get professional identification rather than treating a guess.
