What Is Scratching Inside My Walls?

Quick answer

Start with the location and the source β€” not just the colour or size

Narrow wall noises by combining where the evidence appears, what the specimen looks like and what source conditions are present. Do not treat on colour, bites or a single clue alone. A reliable identification normally combines a specimen or clear photograph with a second clue such as damage, droppings, cast skins, webbing, a food source, moisture, harbourage or an entry route.

Strong clues

Evidence that actually helps

  • Time of day can help: mice and rats are often most active after dark, squirrels usually by day
  • Gnawing, droppings and entry gaps make rodents more plausible
  • Wall noises can travel, so the loudest point is not always the animal location
  • Pipes and thermal movement can mimic scratching

Photograph before treatment

A sharp image beside a ruler or familiar object is far more useful than a description such as β€œtiny black bug”. Keep a specimen if it can be collected safely.

Four-step inspection

What to do next

  1. 1Record time, duration and location of sounds
  2. 2Inspect accessible adjacent spaces for droppings or gnawing
  3. 3Check exterior penetrations without sealing active animals inside
  4. 4Use monitoring or professional inspection before opening walls
Avoid a false ID

Weak clues to treat cautiously

Colour, a single skin mark, one unexplained hole or one noise can narrow a search but rarely identifies a pest on its own. Lighting, damaged specimens, immature life stages and ordinary household debris can all mislead.

Do not apply a pesticide simply to see whether it works. Identification comes first.

Safety

Keep the first response low-risk

Prefer inspection, cleaning, source removal, exclusion and monitoring while the identity is uncertain. If a pesticide is eventually needed, use only an authorised/registered product for the pest and site and follow the complete label.

Keep children, pets, food, pollinators, wildlife and waterways in mind.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

United Kingdom

Use products authorised for the intended use and follow HSE label directions. Wildlife protections and tenancy responsibilities can change the correct action.

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

United States

EPA pesticide labels are directions for legal use; state and local requirements can be stricter. Wildlife and professional licensing rules vary by jurisdiction.

Professional help

When to stop investigating it yourself

Arrange professional identification or inspection when evidence is persistent or widespread, the source is inaccessible, there is structural damage or significant contamination, stinging insects are using a building void, protected wildlife may be involved, or you still cannot identify the problem confidently after collecting good evidence.
