Wasps
- broad category containing many species
- body markings and nesting habits vary
- some species are solitary and low-conflict
Pests, terminology, regulations, local services and shopping links differ between the UK and United States. Choose once and we’ll remember it on this device.
Compare the strongest identification features side by side. Do not decide from one weak clue such as a bite, colour, size or a single damaged item. Use several independent clues before deciding what you have.

“Hornet” is not a synonym for every large wasp. Nest location and species range matter.
Colour, a single bite, one dropping, one damaged item or a brief glimpse is rarely enough. Life stage, lighting, diet and damaged specimens can change appearance.
Do not apply a pesticide as an identification test.
Prefer observation, monitoring, cleaning, source removal and exclusion while identity is uncertain. Follow the complete authorised/registered product label if treatment is later needed.
For stinging insects, structural pests, significant contamination or possible medical concerns, escalate rather than taking unnecessary risks.
Use UK species context and authorised-product/HSE guidance.
Use US species range, EPA label and state/local context.

Get professional identification when evidence remains contradictory, the source is inaccessible, structural timber may be affected, contamination is extensive, a stinging-insect nest is in a difficult location, or treatment would involve regulated products or specialist equipment.
Comparison guidance follows integrated pest-management principles: accurate identification and monitoring before control, prevention where practical, and treatment only when justified.
